Common Misconceptions of Physical Therapy
Physical Therapy is a complicated but also really cool profession. With the complications, there are a lot of misconceptions out there. In New York State, physical therapy has its own set of rules and regulations, and it can be tricky to navigate- especially if you have never needed physical therapy. We spent some time putting together a list of some of the common misconceptions, and have now added four more concerns people have about physical therapy!
“Physical Therapy is a waste of time.”
Not true! Physical therapy is an effective treatment for many conditions and can help to:
Reduce or eliminate pain
Delay or avoid surgery
Improve mobility
Reduce risks for falls
Maximize movement
Recover from and/or prevent future injuries
However, successful treatment depends on setting appropriate goals, as well as the patient’s level of effort in the clinic and at home. A great physical therapist, like the ones at BC + PT, are here to support you and help you reach your goals.
“A physical therapist is the same as a personal trainer.”
Incorrect! Physical therapists are highly trained professionals, learning in educational programs that now require a doctorate degree. Many physical therapists become certified for specific conditions as well. Physical therapists, like medical doctors, have to be licensed to practice and are required to take continuing education courses throughout their careers. Physical therapy as a profession values continuing education and understanding of research in order to best assist patients along their road to recovery. While some exercises are very similar to those you might see at a gym, a physical therapist’s job is to design a treatment plan to address the problem. Additionally, the physical therapist will teach and observe the patient to ensure the exercise is being correctly utilized at the appropriate intensity level for a safe and effective recovery.
“Physical therapy is just for post-surgery patients.”
This statement couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, for most patients the goal of physical therapy is to avoid surgery. The aim is to return our patients to full mobility and functioning. Some people only consider physical therapy as post-surgical care, but it’s important to recognize that physical therapy could be helpful for anyone! The physical therapists at BC +PT treat all sorts of patients who have experienced falls, balance issues, tendonitis, sports injuries, dizziness, work-related injuries, car accident injuries or chronic pain.
“Physical therapy is only for athletes.”
Again, this is another inaccurate statement! While it is true that physical therapists do help a lot of athletes with sports-related injuries, they also help with non-sports related injuries or conditions. Here are different conditions that physical therapists treat. As patients age, their ability to navigate and function safely in the world may deteriorate. This type of deterioration can lead to a fear of falling and avoiding going out into the community. Let BC + PT can help them with the pain or weakness that might be limiting them. The end result is that we’ve improved their confidence, so they can continue to be a part of the community and lead a full life.
