Women’s Health Month is here! Every May is Women’s Health Month, 31 days when we can take time to recognize women’s unique bodies and how to care for them. Health and health science have been a predominantly male-dominated field, and as more and more women enter the healthcare industry, more attention is being paid to how women’s bodies work and what they require. Here at BC + PT, we’re excited to present the following tips in honor of Women’s Health Month!

Women’s health 101: Schedule your annual physical and health appointments

Men and women alike can benefit from this reminder! Staying at a base level of health and hygiene requires that you abide by recommendations like a once-annual physical exam from your primary doctor, a dental cleaning every 6 months, and a once-yearly optometrist appointment. These three make up the building blocks of your wellness, a foundation from which you can continue to optimize to feel your best. A uniquely women’s experience is also a visit to the obstetrician/gynecologist, which is recommended annually.

Stay active and nourished

Women’s health is concerned with the unique medical necessities and bodily functions that only women face, including pregnancy, menstruation, perimenopause and menopause. No matter what stage you’re in in life, staying active and well-nourished can contribute to reduced discomfort during these natural pieces of the female life cycle. We have plenty of content on our social media, including our weekly Wellness Wednesday series, to point you in the right direction- but just remember that you are what you eat! If you’re eating foods that aren’t healthy, you can probably feel it. This also goes for staying active. Working out to fit the “perfect” image of what a woman should look like is detrimental to your mental health. Staying active to care for your body is encouraged and a critical component to optimal health.

Optimize your health

Now that you’ve established a foundation of women’s health by scheduling all of your base appointments and keeping your nutrition and exercise regimen in check, you can start to optimize your health and wellness. Women historically have much on their shoulders, including balancing a career, a home, a family, and personal aspirations. We recommend taking your mental health well into consideration by establishing a self care routine that helps you relax, destress, and maintain a positive daily outlook.

We may be biased, but our final recommendation is to schedule regular chiropractic and physical therapy appointments! Tending to your spinal health through chiropractic adjustments or other gentle means is important, as is maintaining stability, flexibility, and range of motion in spite of life’s wears and tears, which physical therapy can help with. In fact, chiropractic care can aid in pre- and post-partum for women who are pregnant or have recently been pregnant!

Women’s Health is a topic to be celebrated. We encourage all of our readers to stay informed on women’s health and use this blog as a refresher on how to maintain lifelong wellness.
